Several thousand years ago a curse started making it's way slowly across earth. It's effects were gradual but very potent. You see, back then Earth had a flow of magic to it that certain species could tap into - there were also humans that could use it through forbidden magical spells. However the magic on earth was sparse and hard to find, leaving the curse to spread extremely slowly.
Years passed and the people from Ephilion would pass through the portals to earth only to feel the magic that used to be there being sucked away each time. They believed it was their absence that was causing it but they couldn't have been more wrong.
Finally, only a short time ago, the portals were accessed again. The portals were the last bit of magic left on earth to be stricken, so the curse - with no other recourse - went through the magic portals. So the curse, after thousands of years, found itself in Ephilion, a place with so much magic that it couldn't hope to absorb it all. The curse, influenced by this new land, changed. At the entry point things began to die, nature slowly rotting away under it's blighted influence. A dark cloud, a miasma, formed over this circle where all of the trees and wildlife had the life sucked out of them. No creature, no species in Ephilion is safe from the curse's slow spread..
